UC – Red Teaming

Well-known InfoSec personality and respected practitioner, Rob Fuller AKA mubix, offers a comprehensive introduction to Red Teaming, focusing on the practical, ethical, and strategic considerations that come with simulating real-world adversarial threats. You’ll learn how Red Teaming differs from traditional penetration testing, particularly in its broader scope, its emphasis on stealth and evasion, and its ability to rigorously test the organization’s people, processes, and technology. The content highlights how Red Teaming helps refine blue team and incident response capabilities, all while establishing a deeper “ground truth” about an organization’s security posture.

This Upskill Challenge (UC) will also explore how successful Red Teams are built: not from a handful of generalists but from specialists with deep expertise in areas like Linux, Windows, cloud environments, cryptography, reverse engineering, and physical security. As Red Teaming goes beyond mere technical skill, we’ll delve into the ethical and trust considerations that underscore every engagement, discussing what happens when that trust is broken. Finally, we’ll address the tricky balance of ego, showing how a level of confidence can fuel creative problem-solving while emphasizing the maturity needed to prioritize an employer’s best interests.

What’s an Upskill Challenge (UC)?

A UC is a CTF-style, bite-sized lesson from the JHT Team, our courseware developers as well as “friends” of JHT. They are meant to be short and to the point. UCs focus on a single tool or concept and are helpful in quickly providing useful skills that might be prerequisites for other types of educational content on the platform.

A UC should be 10 – 30 minutes of student time and have no VMs. There are quizzes to make sure that the content is understood.

Prerequisites for UC – Red Teaming

UCs assume no knowledge at all! They’re meant to be completely self-contained, so all of the answers are in the lesson. No outside research is required.
