We’ve received numerous requests for Free Upskill Challenges (UCs) that go beyond cybersecurity but land squarely in the realm of the interest to those with the hacker mindset. The Maker Movement fits into that category incredibly well! Therefore, we tapped Erich Kron, hacker, maker and cybersecurity professional, to offer an introductory look inside the world of 3D printing.
The ability to make your own parts or items from scratch is very rewarding and allows for customization and personalization in ways that have not been available before now. While it may seem complex at first, modern 3D printing has been greatly simplified and has a large base of people in social media groups to help with nearly any problem. In this UC we will look at the different types of equipment, software, consumables, and some common pitfalls that keep some people from getting started on the journey.

Goals for UC – 3D Printing
Throughout this UC, you will learn:
- Identify the different types of 3D printers and basic parts
- Choose the type of filament to use for different projects
- Slice your models and prepare them for printing
What’s an Upskill Challenge (UC)?
A UC is a CTF-style, bite-sized lesson from the JHT Team, our courseware developers as well as “friends” of JHT. They are meant to be short and to the point. UCs focus on a single tool or concept and are helpful in quickly providing useful skills that might be prerequisites for other types of educational content on the platform.
A UC should be 10 – 30 minutes of student time and have no VMs. There are quizzes to make sure that the content is understood.
Prerequisites for UC – 3D Printing
UCs assume no knowledge at all! They’re meant to be completely self-contained, so all of the answers are in the lesson. No outside research is required.
