UC – Google Dorking

Before we ever touch a target system directly, a significant portion of a penetration test involves meticulous reconnaissance. This is where we act as digital detectives, using publicly available resources to uncover clues about our target’s digital footprint. It’s about being resourceful, finding data points that might seem innocuous on their own, but when pieced together, paint a detailed picture of potential vulnerabilities. Enter… Google Dorking!

Google Dorking is an incredibly powerful, often overlooked, and entirely passive method for deep-dive information gathering. We’re not “hacking” in the sense of exploiting systems. Instead, we’re leveraging Google’s immense indexing capabilities to find information that an organization has inadvertently left exposed to the public internet. Think of it as using a finely tuned magnet to pull out specific needles from the world’s largest haystack.

In this Free Upskill Challenge (UC), you will quickly learn that it’s not just about finding “stuff”; it’s about finding the right stuff – the critical pieces of information that might save you hours of active scanning, reduce noise, and directly lead to high-impact findings for the client. Plus, everyone likes an easy win if they can find it!

Price = FREE!

JHT is excited to bring you the first in a long series of Free UCs by Bailey Marshall covering a number of tools, techniques and necessary skills for pentesters. If you thought her free UC on Pentest Reports was valuable, just wait until she unloads her brain on the entire process of this highly sought after job in the exciting world of offensive security.

What’s an Upskill Challenge (UC)?

A UC is a CTF-style, bite-sized lesson from the JHT Team, our courseware developers as well as “friends” of JHT. They are meant to be short and to the point. UCs focus on a single tool or concept and are helpful in quickly providing useful skills that might be prerequisites for other types of educational content on the platform.

A UC should be 10 – 30 minutes of student time and have no VMs. There are quizzes to make sure that the content is understood.

Prerequisites for “UC – Google Dorking”

UCs assume no knowledge at all! They’re meant to be completely self-contained, so all of the answers are in the lesson. No outside research is required.
