Have you ever looked at a ship and thought about its cybersecurity? If I had to guess, probably not. You were probably more focused on how something that big can still float. This Free Upskill Challenge (UC) introduces you to the world of maritime cybersecurity. It’s a massive topic that can refer to the security of ships, ports, maritime satellite communications, autonomous vessels, and much more.
Due to being such a wide-reaching topic, this UC will remain focused on the cybersecurity of ships with a solid overview of the protocols, systems, and attack surfaces found on modern vessels, the real-world threats they face, and the tools you can use to start exploring maritime cybersecurity on your own… even when you don’t have access to an oil tanker or even a small sailboat.
This Free Upskill Challenge is the 1st in a series with Dean Macris and James Campbell on the expansive world of Maritime Cybersecurity. Make sure to stay tuned for more challenges in the future, where youโll learn about ports, go more in-depth on maritime specific protocols, and more!
There might even be a full course in the works!

Goals for UC – Maritime Cybersecurity
By the end of this UC, you should be a high-level understanding of:
- Tools for Maritime Cybersecurity research and testing
- What is Maritime Cybersecurity
- Why Maritime Cybersecurity matters
- The operational zones and attack surface of a vessel
- Common protocols used aboard ships.
- Attack vectors targeting navigation, propulsion, and electrical systems
Whatโs an Upskill Challenge (UC)?
A UC is a CTF-style, bite-sized lesson from the JHT Team, our courseware developers as well as โfriendsโ of JHT. They are meant to be short and to the point. UCs focus on a single tool or concept and are helpful in quickly providing useful skills that might be prerequisites for other types of educational content on the platform.
A UC should be 10 โ 30 minutes of student time and have no VMs. There are quizzes to make sure that the content is understood.
Prerequisites for UC – Maritime Cybersecurity
UCs assume no knowledge at all! Theyโre meant to be completely self-contained, so all of the answers are in the lesson. No outside research is required.
